How to choose an extra large rug
Extra large rugs suit rooms where a 9x12 would look small. The size names, such as 10x13, 10x14 and 12x18, are rounded, so check the actual size shown under Size on each rug.
What room needs an extra large rug?
Great rooms, open plan living and dining areas, and big living rooms of about 16 by 20 feet or more. A large rug can anchor one seating group, or a whole open space if the furniture is arranged around it. See our guide to oversized rugs for open plan rooms.
How much floor should show?
Leave about 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls, more in a very large room. If the rug would reach closer, choose the next size down, for example a 9x12.
Do I need a rug pad?
A rug pad is useful under a large rug, so it does not shift when people walk across it.
